Paul Sullivan
Veterans for America (VFA), formerly the Vietnam Veterans
of America Foundation, is uniting a new generation of veterans with those
from past wars to address the causes, conduct and consequences of war. Together,
Veterans offer a crucial perspective when addressing public and political
concerns about war in the 21st century.
Paul Sullivan comes to Veterans for
America with more than a decade of experience in veterans' advocacy. He
promotes the war-related needs and concerns of service members and veterans
with Congress, the Administration, and the press, with a strong focus on
Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Paul served as a
Cavalry Scout with the Army's 1st Armored Division during the 1991 Gulf
War. Concerned about the healthcare needs of fellow veterans, he formed the
Gulf War Veterans of Georgia in 1994, one of the first Desert Storm veteran
support groups.
Paul served on the first board of directors of the National
Gulf War Resource Center from 1995 to 1997, and then he moved from Georgia
to Washington to become NGWRC's executive director from 1997 to 2000.
In 1998, he was at the White House when the President signed the "Persian Gulf Veterans Act
of 1998," a new law the NGWRC successfully promoted that expands healthcare
and disability benefits for Gulf War veterans. Other legislative efforts
promoted by the NGWRC included two new initiatives available to Iraq and
Afghanistan war veterans: pre- and post-deployment medical exams and two
years' of free healthcare after discharge.
From 2000 to 2006, Paul worked
as a project manager at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs where
he led a team of analysts who produced the quarterly Gulf War Veterans
Information System report as well as many other statistical and analytical
reports related to the Gulf War and the Global War on Terrorism.
